full and complete statement under oath, setting forth all of
the items of said expense accounts for the month in question,
including the names of all deputies and the amounts allowed
to each and all other items of expense, which statement under
oath it is hereby made the duty of the sheriff to make up and
submit to the said County Commissioners at the time of each
monthly requisition, which sum or sums shall be in lieu of all
expenses, fees and costs now or heretofore allowed the sheriff
of Wicomico County for expenses in carrying out the duties of
his office including all expenses for transferring prisoners to
and from penal institutions and places of confinement in the
State of Maryland under sentence or order of any authorized
authority, and the said County Commissioners shall not pay
the said sheriff for any service he may render in the discharge
of his official duties any other or further compensation and
shall not be liable in any way for any other fee or compensa-
tion whatever to said sheriff, than is above provided for the
discharge of his official duties and the expenses of his office
except for the boarding and keeping of prisoners in the county
jail as hereinafter provided.

389A. In computing the said monthly account for expenses,
the sheriff of Wicomico County shall be allowed mileage at the
rate of five cents ($0. 05) per mile for the use of his automobile
or the automobile of his chief deputy or any of his deputies in
the discharge of their official duties, and he shall be allowed
his actual carfare or mileage, as aforesaid, in the transporting
of all prisoners to and from penal institutions and places of
confinement in the State of Maryland, under sentence or order
or any authorized authority.

389B. The sheriff of Wicomico County is hereby authorized
and required to appoint, with the advice and consent of the
State's Attorney, one deputy sheriff for said county who shall
be the chief deputy and who shall hold office for a period of
four years, said term to begin and end with that of the sheriff
unless removed by said sheriff at any time he may elect to do
so before the expiration thereof, and the said chief deputy shall
receive an annual salary of the sum of Twelve Hundred Dollars
($1, 200. 00) to be paid to him in monthly installments of one
hundred dollars ($100. 00) by the County Commissioners of
Wicomico County; the said chief deputy, in addition to per-
forming the general duties assigned to him by the sheriff, shall
also serve as a special investigator in all criminal matters in
said county, and, in this connection, shall also operate under
the joint supervision and direction of the sheriff and State's
Attorney for said county.
