WHEREAS, the construction of said bridge will also give em-
ployment to a large number of people; therefore, be it
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
Congress of the United States be and it is hereby requested
to make available to the Chesapeake Bay Authority sufficient
funds to construct a bridge across the Chesapeake Bay; and
be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the House be and he is
hereby directed to send a copy of this resolution to the Speaker
of the House, the President of the Senate, and to each repre-
sentative from Maryland in the Congress of the United States.

Joint Resolution requesting the United States Bureau of Fish-
eries to investigate and determine the most suitable place
for a shad hatchery in Maryland.
WHEREAS, the shad fishery of the Chesapeake Bay has long
been recognized as one of the most important to the com-
mercial fishermen of Maryland and Virginia; and
WHEREAS, in recent years a marked depletion has seriously
affected this fishery to the extent of millions of pounds. The
maximum production in 1897 was 17, 329, 000 pounds, in 1935
the production was 3, 682, 900 pounds. While the present con-
dition may have been brought about by the erection of dams
in the rivers, the pollution of waters by commercial manu-
facturers and the placing of too many fish nets at the mouth
of the tributaries have prevented the shad from reaching the
spawning grounds; and
WHEREAS, records show that the State of Maryland and the
United States Bureau of Fisheries planted 3, 061, 488, 720 young
shad between 1876 and 1916 in the waters of the Chesapeake
Bay, and during this period the production was very much
greater than it is today; and
WHEREAS, in recent years the shad hatchery at the head of
the Chesapeake Bay, operated by the Bureau of Fisheries, has
been closed, and since that date the number of young shad
liberated in the waters of the Bay have been decreased; there-
