enacted by Chapter 200 of the Acts of the General Assembly
of Maryland, 1943 Session, be, and the same is hereby re-
pealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

711. The Mayor of Hyattsville elected in May 1947,
and his successor or successors thereafter appointed in ac-
cordance with law to fill any vacancy in the office of Mayor,
or thereafter elected at any regular election, shall receive a
compensation of One Hundred ($100.00) Dollars per month, to
reimburse him for his expenses in connection with the office
of Mayor. Each Councilman elected in May, 1947, qualified
and holding office during the municipal year 1947-1948, and
each Councilman thereafter appointed in accordance with
law to fill any vacancy in that office, or thereafter elected
and qualified, shall receive a compensation of Fifty ($50.00)
Dollars per month to reimburse him for his expenses in con-
nection with the office of Councilman. Compensation herein
provided to be paid to the Mayor and Councilmen shall be
chargeable as a municipal expense and included in the tax
levy for each year.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall not
become effective unless and until it shall be submitted to the
qualified voters living within the corporate limits of the
City of Hyattsville, as the same exist at the time of the
referendum herein provided, or on the first Monday in May,
1947, should this Act be passed prior to said first Monday
in May, 1947, at a referendum election and accepted by a
majority of the persons voting at said election. For such
purpose, a referendum election of the qualified voters as
aforesaid, shall be held by the Mayor and City Council of
Hyattsville at an election, which may be in connection with
any regular or special election, the date for which shall be
fixed by it not later than six (6) months from the date of
the passage of this Act, and said election shall be conducted
under the provisions of existing laws for the election of City
officers and in accordance with such ordinances as may have
been adopted or shall be adopted by the Mayor and City
Council of Hyattsville, not inconsistent with law, for the
submission to the voters of said municipality of the provis-
ions of this Act, and the manner of the submission of the
question to the voters shall be that on the ballots of such
election there shall be printed a synopsis of this Act, which
synopsis shall be sufficient if it shall contain the full word-
ing of Section 711 above enacted, and under such synopsis
the words, "For Compensation for Mayor and Councilmen"
with a blank square opposite at the right, and words,
"Against Compensation for Mayor and Councilmen" with a
