(1942 Edition), being Article 13 of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland, title "Harford County", sub-title "Sheriff",
as said sections were added by Chapter 810 of the Acts of
1943, be and they are hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:

453. The County Commissioners of Harford County are
authorized and directed to levy for, and pay to the Sheriff
of Harford County, annually, in equal monthly installments,
a salary of Three Thousand Dollars ($3,000), and shall also
levy and allow to the said Sheriff, a sum annually, to be paid
to him in equal monthly payments, which in the discretion
of said County Commissioners shall be sufficient and proper
for all expenses of the office of the said Sheriff, which shall
include the salary of deputies, and the care, labor, respon-
sibility and expense of said Sheriff in the discharge of the
duties of his said office, including the safekeeping in jail of
the prisoners committed to his custody, the cooking and serv-
ing of meals to said prisoners, the necessary laundry for
said prisoners and the maintenance of the jail in a cleanly
condition; and said County Commissioners shall not pay
said Sheriff any further sum for the discharge of his official
duties, except as follows: for every execution of the sentence
of death by said Sheriff upon any person convicted of a capi-
tal offense, he shall be paid the sum of Three Hundred Dol-
lars; for the conveyance of any person or persons under sen-
tence to any State institution or to or from any jail or station
house of any other County, or the City of Baltimore, or any
other place of confinement beyond the limits of Harford Coun-
ty, he shall be paid his actual costs of transportation, to-
gether with the actual costs of transportation of such per-
son or persons; for all fuel and lighting needed for the
comfort of said prisoners; and for the allowance for the
meals for said prisoners as provided in Section 455. The said
County Commissioners are hereby authorized to advance to
the Sheriff of Harford County at the beginning of each month
an amount sufficient to defray the costs of operation of the
Sheriff's office during the monthly period next succeeding the
date of each advance payment.

455. The Sheriff shall furnish such food supplies in his
judgment necessary and proper for the support and main-
tenance of all persons committed to the jail of said County,
and the County Commissioners of Harford County shall levy
and pay to the said Sheriff such sum from time to time as
they may deem necessary, for each prisoner confined in said
jail, to be paid to said Sheriff monthly.

All surplus funds remaining in the Sheriff's hands at the
end of each vear over and above his salarv of Three Thousand
