1878.] OF THE SENATE. 461

Mr. Steiner presented the following memorial:
To the Honorable, the General Assembly of Maryland :

The memorial of the undersigned Committee appointed on
behalf of the Union Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument Asso-
ciation, respectfully represents.

That it is a well known fact, that in every other State but
Maryland, which contributed Soldiers to the army of the
United States, during the civil war, and in some of those
States, in almost every city, town or village, memorials have
been erected to those who fell upon the field of honor.

That since the close of the war, the Legislature of Mary-
land, has, from time to time, generously appropriated large
sums to honor the remains of those of her sons who fell upon
the side of the late Confederate States, but has as yet omit-
ted any recognition of those equally her sons who fell, and
in much larger numbers, upon the side of the United States,
although entering that service at the direct invitation of the
State of Maryland, through the Executive and Legislative
authorities.

Your memoralists, therefore, pray that such an amount
may be appropriated as to your Honorable Body may seem
just, for the purpose of aiding in the erection, at some suita-
ble place, of a monument to the memory of the Union Sol-
diers and Sailors, who, at the call of the State of Maryland,
sacrificed their lives upon the altar of their country.

CHS. E. PHELPS,
JAMES B. GROOME,
F. C. LATROBE,
FRANCIS P. STEVENS,
STEVENSON ARCHER,
EDWIN H. WEBSTER,
W. O. BIGELOW.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on Finance.

Mr. Sulivane presented the petition of sundry citizens of
Dorchester County for authority to build a wharf and pier in
the Choptank river, near Lower Hunting Creek, in said
county.

Which was read, and referred to Senators Sulivane, Steiner
and Humphreys.

Mr. Humphreys presented the petition of sundry citizens of
Dorchester and Wicomico Counties, praying for the passage
of a law to prevent fishing in Nanticoke river between day-
light in the evening and daybreak.
