          Contra }               of November in the year of or Lord. 1693. at Monocan within ye Jurisdiction

John: Pope -                   of this Court, upon their Oaths . Doe present John: Pope Late of the sd County

~ ~ ~ ~ ~                                Labourer, for that the Said John not having the fear of God before his eyes

But moved by the Instigation of the devil, Sometime on or about ye tenth day of July in ye year of or Lord

1693// Att the house of Peter Lowder in the County aforesd. The Said John then & there being on the

Sabbath day Comonly calld the Lords day at ye place aforesd in ye County aforesd, Several Wicked Oaths

and Curses did then and there utter Contrary to the Peace, and agt the Laws in that Case made & provided

   The Indictmt being read to wch ye sd Jno. Pope pleaded not guilty. And therefore Comand ws given to the

Sheriff of or County to bring here twelve good & lawfull men of his Balywick, that the matter in hand might

be the better understood A List or pannel whereof are returned as followeth (viz) Thomas: Dixson. Natt

Horsey Wm Banister Adam: Heatch. John: Harris Senr. Leonard: Jones Abraham: Knott. Wm: Warwick Tho.

Shiles. Wm: Henderson. Teague Quillane. Wm: Scott. 12) who being leagully Sumoned returned & Sworn

upon the holy Evangelists, as also heard & Seen the Evidences Sworn & Examined, received their Charge and are

Sent forth in Order to determine ye matters ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ And this day to (viz) ye day aforesd Came the -

aforesd Jurors of sd Jury betwixt their Said Maties & Jno. Pope to ye Barr in Court, being each man

agreed of their verdict, the plt & dft being Calld. The verdict is read as followeth = viz. Wee

of the Jury do find Jno Pope guilty of a breach of Sabbath // Thomas Dixson. — Which verdict

this Court Orderd to be entered . And further Orders sd Pope ffyned according to Act of Assembly, Order the

Jurors fees. Ordere also the sd Pope give Security for the good behaviour. Whereupon Came the Said Pope wth

his two Securities (viz) Thomas: Oxford and Wm. Bradshaw. And the Said Pope Did by Recognizance acknowledge

and Confess him Self to owe and be indebted unto their Maties in the Sum of tenn pounds Sterling money of England

due And the Said Oxford and Bradshaw in the Sum of five pounds a piece like money aforesd, all due to be levied

On their goods and Chattells Lands and Tennements for their Maties uses &ca. ________________________

The Condicon of which Recognizance is Such that if the above bound John: Pope be of the good behaviour & abearance

to all their Maties Liege people of this Province dureing this Courts pleasure as also pay his ffyne & fees. That

then this Recognizance to be void & of none Effect, Otherwayes to be & remain in full power force & vertue.

                 Peter Lowders letter was likewise read to Court & Jury Concerning sd Pope.
