                     Contra }        Wm: Laws late of Somerset County was attached to answer unto George Layfield, Esqr

William: Laws Dfendt.               & Eliz. his Wife Extrix of ye last will & Testamt of Coll. Wm:Stevens decd of a plea

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~               of trespass on ye Case &ca. ____ And whereupon the said George & Eliz by Peter [Dent]

                                                                their Attorney Complains that whereas the said Wm:Laws the day of in ye year of

Our Lord 1685 at Monacan within the Jurisdiction of this Court was indebted to ye sd Coll. Wm: Stevens in his lifetime

in the Sum of five hundred pounds of tobacco being as well for four hundred pounds of tobacco at ye Speciall [inss- - ]

and request, and for ye debt of the said Wm: Laws, by ye said Coll Wm Stevens pd unto one Capt Marshall as also

for One hundred pounds of tobacco by the sd Stevens for ye said Laws paid unto one James Obratten which said [two]

Sums amounts to the Sum of five hundred pounds of tobacco and the Said Wm:Laws to ye Said Wm: Stevens in his

life time in manner aforesd being indebted did assume upon himself & to the Said Wm: Stevens in his lifetime then and

there faithfully promise that he the said Wm: Laws the said Sum of five hundred pounds of tobacco when he should

be thereunto requested, would well and truly Content & pay, Nevertheless the said Wm: Laws his promise & assumption

not regarding but minding & fraudulently intending him the said Wm:Stevens in his life time Craftily & Subtilly to

deceive & defraud, the same to the sd Wm: Stevens in his life time nor to the said Eliz. after ye death of the sd Wm

Stevens while She was Sole & unmarried, nor to ye said George & Elizabeth Since the marriage between them had and

Solemnized, nor to any of them hath not paid, but hath hitherto refused and doth Still refuse to ye damage - - -
