232 Somerset Ss / The Deposition of Cornelius Gourde aged eighteen years or thereabouts who deposeth & (saith) that about the Second or third Sunday in Janry last past, this Deponent being desired by (mr ?) Ellis Coleman to come that night to make him a fire, accordingly went, & when he had done being desireous to goe to his quarters. mrs. Coleman did desire him to Stay all night She fearing her husband would murther her that night, but in Case he would not Stay, that then he would Stay a while behind the house, the which he did, & by the time he might have been out of the hearing of the house the Said Coleman roused from a pretended (sleep) takeing up a fire brand, Swearing he would be revenged of her then, if he were Sure (to) be hanged before the doore tomorrow morning. Then this Deponent went in desireing the Said Coleman to be more Civil to his Wife, and after Some time this Deponent went out again Staying the Second time besides the house, & did hear the Sd Coleman tell his Wife that he could hang her, She replyed that She could better hang him then he Could her, and after Some pause he Said that he must run away, repeating the Same words Severall times, But afterwards he told her that She Should goe away. And further this Deponent Saith that he being one imployed by the Constable to make Search for the bones of the lost man, did on the Second or third day at night (to the best of his memory as to ye time hear the Sd Coleman & his Wife whispering in the bed, which Caused him to draw hear but could not hear their discourse, but after Some time did hear the Sd Coleman Say Clapping his hand agt his body, I shall be hanged, repeating the Same thing twice or thrice to the truth of all, which this Deponent hath here unto Sett his hand this Seaventh day of Janry 1692/3 // Cornelius: Gourde his marke Memorandum that the day above mentioned the Sd Cornelius Gourde did make Oath to the truth of the above Written. wittness my hand. Aged fourty four years or there abouts, who deposeth & Saith, that about the 18th: day of Janry last this Deponent being at the house of Ellis: Coleman, did tell the Sd Coleman that he was Suspected from words of their own (that is to Say) between his Wife & him, that he was guilty of the murther of Darbys Brother which had been So long wanting, the sd Coleman answered this Deponent that he Coming through Pennsilvania did call at the house of mr Darby, which was Brother to the man that hath been long missing, The sd Darby asked the Said Coleman if he had heard anything of his Brother he said no, but (after) |
