( 231 ) Somerset County Ss // By vertue of a precept from under the hand & Seal of mr James:Round. mr Nicholas Cornewell Constable brought before me George Banam & Anne Rice upon Examinacon the Said Anne being examined, declareth that She being very Conversant at ye house of Ellis Coleman, and an observor of their exorbitant liveing, did on the last day of December last past (according to the best of her memory as to the day) hear the Said Colman & his Wife upbraid each other with doing of murther, She the Said mrs Colman Saying to her husband, I can hang yw for murther & I can hang yw replyed Ellis:Colman to his Wife for murther, Then Ellis further insisted & Said to his Wife, yw whore would yw have me Confesse that I killd a man, Then Said mrs. Coleman to her husband it was a Boy, the Said Anne Rich & the Said Banam, further declareth, that they both being at mr Colmans on Satterday last, did hear the Said mrs. Colman Say & Swear yt the man by name Darby which Some years agoe lodged at mr Colmans house, & was not Seen Since that the Said Darby her husband had Seen in New England a Butcher this the Said Anne & George doe afirme to be the truth as Wittness their hands her Anne: Rice This last day of Janry examined pr me marke Saml. Hopkins . his Sworn to the 15th. March in Open Court pr Ge: Banam. Geo: Banam marke Somerset Ss // The Deposition of Anthony Jones aged thirty two years or thereabouts who deposeth & Saith. that mr Ellis Coleman Came to his house on the twenty third day of December last and did call this Deponent out of the door, askeing him whe - he was not an Evidence for John:ffreeman agt him, this Deponent told him noe he was not Sumoned, then Said mr Coleman what News doe yw hear of me, this Deponent told him that he heard he was in prison upon a Suspicon of murder. The sd Coleman made a kind of a Sleighting noise, withall Saying that that man was alive & well in New England. that indeed he had not Seen him, but that when he came from New England as he came through Pennsilvania,did call at his Brother Darbys house, and the Said Darby did tell him that his Brother was alive & well in New England to the truth of which this Deponent hath hereunto Sett his hand this 31th day of Janry 1692/3 Anthony X Jones his marke Memorandum that the day above mentioned (viz) ye 31th day of Janry 1692 Came Anthony Jones before me & did make Oath to the truth of the above Written Wittness my hand James: Round.
