( 228 ) June 14th, 1693 At a Court held by their Maties Justices of the Peace for ye County of Somerset the Province of Maryland the 14th. day of June anno Domini 1693 ___ Comrs Present /viz) mr ffrancis: Jenckins. mr Roger: Woolford. Capt.Wm:Whittington. mr Thomas Newbold. mr James: Round. mr Saml.Hopkins. mr Edmund:Howard. mr Thomas: Jones mr Stephen:Horsey & mr Arnold: Elzey. Memorand that whereas there was twenty dayes worke due from Eliz Larrance in March Court last past which sd worke was then Ordered to be paid forthwith, towards the mending Colemans Bridge, and this report is made to Court that ye sd worke is not yet paid but rests due. Their Maties Somerset County Ss // Contra } The Grand Jury for the body of this County upon their Oaths Ellis: Coleman & doe Present Ellis Coleman & Damarias his Wife late of this Damarias his Wife County, for that the Said Ellis & Damarias not having ye fear - - - - - - - - of God before their eyes but moved by the instigation of ye Divell Sometime in or about the month of Janry in the year of or Lord 1691. at Snow hill within the Jurisdiction of this Court One hogshead of Tobacco being the Tobacco of John ffreemans of this County marked WD. weighing neat four hundred & Six pounds, the Said Ellis and Damarias the Said Tobacco out of the house or Store of the sd John:ffreeman at Snow hill Towne did felloniously Steal & Carry away Contrary to the peace & agt the forme of an act of Assembly in that Case made & provided. Dent. // The Indictmt being read to which the sd Colemans et uxor pleaded not guilty/ Whereupon Comand was given to the Sheriff to bring here twelve good & lawfull men of his Balywick that the matter in hand might be the better understood, a list or pannel whereof are returned as followeth (viz.) Wm:Planner. Richard:Ackworth. Robert:Burridge Robert:Catlin Abraham Emmett. Thomas: Humphreys. John:Perkins. Rowland Beavins. Robert:Smith. Tho: Oxford. William:Richardson. Edward: Green. 12: who being legally Sumoned, returned and Sworn upon the holy Evangelists, having heard the foresd Indictment as also Seen & heard these Six Evidences Sworn & examined. viz Jno. ffreeman. Anne Rice. Matthew Scarbrough, John:Webb. Wm Tompkins & Anthony Jones. Received their Charge & are Sent forth. - - - - - - And this day(viz) the day aforesd Came the Jurors of said Jury betwixt their Maties & the sd Coleman et Uxor, and being Calld perticularly each man by his Name, all being unnanimously agreed of their Verdict, the plts & Dft being likewise calld, The verdict is read in these express words following.
