( 216 ) June 14th: 1692 - - - - - - - - - - - Wm: Morris was by the sheriffe of our County this day brought into Court. then this following mittimus was read Maryland Somerset County Sc. ffrancis Jenckins. Thomas: Newbold and George: Layfield three of their Maties Justices of the Peace for this County To mr Stephen: Luffe high Sheriffe greeting we Send yw here withall the body of William Morris of the aforesd County Labourer brought before us this day and Charged with many notorius horrid Crimes, emongst which is Sundry damnable Blasphemies against our Blessed Saviour. Jesus Christ as any monstrous wroth could utter proved by many wittnesses &ca. And therefore these are on the behalf of their Maties our Sovereign Lord & Lady King William & Queen Mary &ca to Command yw that imediately you receive the said William: Morris into your Custody and him Safely keep in yr Goale without Bail &ca. So that you have his body before their Maties Justices of the Peace for this County at the next Court to be holden for this County or that he be delivered by the due Order of their Maties Laws. hereof fail you not as you will answer the Contempt at your peril. Given at Pocomoke the 14th: day of April in the 3d. year of their Maties Reign by the grace of God Over England Scotland ffrance & Ireland defendrs of the faith &ca. King Wm. & Queen Mary. Ano. Sealed The Constable to take into Custody the abovesd Prisoner and him Safely to Convey to the sheriffe of this County and impowred to presse Competent asistance as wittness our hands & Seals the day and year abovesd ffra: Jenckins Sealed - - - - Tho: Newbold. Sealed ____ Geo: Layfield Sealed - - - - mr Stephen: Luffe From mr Thomas: Dixons house at Annamesicke 6th: May. 1692 Sr / Meeting with William: Morris. I have laid hold on him. he told me he was designed to goe to Coll. Brownes I have Sent him there accordingly, & fearing least the Coll. should not be at home Ordered ye Constable to bring him to you, and doe require you & Strictly Comand you, in their Maties Names that yw Secure ye person of the said Morris, So that he may be, and personally appear at the next County Court to answer unto Such things as may be alleadged against him. You cannot but be Senscible of the nature of his Crime, and ye manner of his Escape from you. / my best respects to you presented I am . / Your friend to Serve you. Edmund: Howard Then was read John: Emmetts Archibald: Holmes & Doctr. Jno. Vigerous Depositions and the Deponents made Oath to the truth thereof . - - - - - - - - - - - - } after which this Court Orders the sherife of our County to take into Custody the sd Morris and him Saifly keep to that he have his body before our Justices at our next County Court to be holden on the munday before August Court next to answer to Such things and matters as shall be Objected agt him the said Morris on behalf of their Maties. |
