having been passed by a yea and nay vote, supported by
three-fifths of all the members elected to each of the two
Houses of the General Assembly of Maryland, the same shall
take effect from the date of its passage.

(House Bill 20)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 52
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1943
Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title ''Deputy Sheriffs",
authorizing an increase in the compensation of the Deputy
Sheriffs of Montgomery County.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 52 of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1943 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title
"Deputy Sheriffs", he and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:
52. It shall be the duty of the sheriffs of the several
counties to appoint not less than three deputy sheriffs, who
shall provide automobiles or motorcycles for their own use
in performing their duties, and shall be paid by the County
Commissioners, each of said deputy sheriffs shall receive the
sum of twenty-one hundred dollars per annum, payable in
monthly instalments of One Hundred and Seventy-five Dol-
lars and such additional salary as may be determined from
time to time by the County Commissioners, and, in addition,
each of said deputy sheriffs shall be paid by the County
Commissioners an annual sum of six hundred dollars in
monthly instalments of fifty dollars, which sum or sums
shall be in lieu of all expenses for traveling, transportation
or use of automobiles or motorcycles, and in lieu of any and
all expenses now or heretofore allowed such deputy sheriffs
by way of salary, fees or expenses. The Sheriff shall have
power to designate one of said deputy sheriffs as chief
deputy, who shall be paid an additional compensation of
three hundred dollars per year. The said deputies shall hold
office at the pleasure of the Sheriff and shall be removed
by the Sheriff at any time the Sheriff may elect or by the
Circuit Court of the County, upon indictment and conviction
as now provided by law. It shall be the duty of the Sheriff
to require said deputies to do and perform at any time in
any place in said county any service incident to the office of
deputy sheriff, which they may be by the Sheriff ordered
