tion 18 of Chapter 560 of the Acts of 1947, and to enact
a new section 147G in lieu thereof, relating to definitions;
to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 147-1
of Article 89B of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1939
Edition) title "State Roads", sub-title "State Highway
Construction Bonds" as said section Was enacted by Sec-
tion 18 of Chapter 560 of the Acts of 1947, relating to the
use of the proceeds of "State Highway Construction
Bonds".

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 9 of Article 89B of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1939 Edition) title "State Roads", sub-title
"Distribution and Use of Special Funds", be and the same
is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read
as follows:

9. As used in this sub-title the following words and terms
shall have the following meanings, unless the context shall
indicate another or different meaning or intent.

(A) (Arterial Highway. ) The term "arterial highway"
shall mean a thoroughfare of one or more traffic lanes
in each direction with or without physical separation
of opposing traffic lanes, and which by the applica-
tion of proper design standards such as adequate lane
width, adequate shoulders, proper sight distances and other
such features of design can safely and expeditiously serve
traffic volumes up to 3, 000 vehicles per day, and shall em-
brace all bridges, tunnels, overpasses, underpasses, inter-
changes, entrance plazas, approaches and other structures
which the Commission may deem necessary to the operation
of the arterial highway, together with all property,
rights, easements, franchises and interests acquired by
the Commission for the construction and operation thereof.

(B) (Controlled Access Arterial Highway. ) The term
"controlled access arterial highway" shall mean a major
thoroughfare of two or more traffic lanes in each direction
having the same characteristics as an expressway except
that the conflict of cross streams of traffic need not be elimi-
nated at every intersection by means of grade separation
structures.

(G) (Expressway. ) The term "expressway" shall mean a
major thoroughfare of two or more traffic lanes in each
direction, designed to eliminate principal traffic hazards,
and shall embrace all bridges, tunnels, overpasses, under-
passes, interchanges, entrance plazas, approaches, and other1
structures which the Commission may deem necessary to the
operation of the expressway, together with all property,
rights, easements, franchises and interests acquired by the
