for all or any of the contracts made or authorised
by or for said company, and for all just claims
against the same, but none of the stockholders shall be
liable either in person or property for any contracts of,
or claims against the said corporation, and the service
of legal process on the president or any of the directors
shall be a sufficient service on this corporation.

     SEC. 7.  And be it enacted, That the stockholders at
a general or special meeting called in such manner as
the by-laws shall prescribe at which the holders of a
majority of the stock shall be present or represented,
shall have power to alter or repeal any by-laws made
by the president and directors, and also to make such
new by-laws, rules and regulations as the holders of a
majority of the whole number of shares of the stock
shall determine upon conformably to the limitations and
restrictions of this act.

     SEC. 8.  And be it enacted, That nothing herein contained
shall be taken or construed to authorise the said
company either directly or indirectly to exercise or use
banking privileges.

     SEC. 9.  And be it enacted, That this act shall be
and continue in force until the first day of January
eighteen hundred and seventy, and until the end of
the next session of the General Assembly, which shall
happen thereafter.

                           CHAPTER 415.

            AN ACT relating to the Land Office.


     Passed May
31, 1853.
     WHEREAS, since the adoption of the new constitution,
experience has taught that it is necessary to confer
certain powers upon the court of the commissioner of the
land office heretofore exercised by the chancellor, while
presiding ex-officio in that court, and to confer other
powers upon the commissioner of the land office,
necessary for the convenient and prompt execution of
his duties; Therefore,
Preamble.
     SECTION 1.  Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland,
That the court of the commissioner of
the land office, is hereby erected into and declared
henceforth to be a court of record, with the same powers
