empowered to draw his warrant on the Treasurer for
said amount.

     SEC. 2.  And be it enacted, That this act shall take
effect from the day of its passage.

                           CHAPTER 355.

AN ACT amendatory of an act, passed at December
     session eighteen hundred and forty-seven, chapter
     two hundred and thirty-two, providing for the better
     regulation of Primary Schools in Washington county.

28, 1853.
     SECTION 1.  Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland,
That there shall be appointed by the
commissioners of Washington county, one learned and
discreet person from each election district in Washington
county; and the several persons so appointed shall
be styled a board of school commissioners for Washington
county; the first appointment for said school commissioners,
shall be made on the first Wednesday in
December, or within ten days thereafter, in the year
eighteen hundred and fifty-three, and at the same time
in every second year thereafter; and said school commissioners
shall enter on the duty of their office on the
first day of January succeeding their appointment, and
shall serve for two years from the date of their appointment,
or until their successors shall qualify.
Board of commissioners.
     SEC. 2.  And be it enacted, That the said board of
school commissioners, shall organise said board by the
election of a president from among their own number,
they shall at the same time elect a secretary to said
board, with such compensation for his services as they
may deem right and equitable; they shall elect a treasurer
from among said board of school commissioners,
who shall bond to the State of Maryland, in the sum
of ten thousand dollars, with at least two sureties, to be
approved by said commissioners, with the condition
that he will faithfully perform the duties of treasurer of
the school commissioners of said county, he shall pay
over and apply all monies; that shall come to his hand
or care as treasurer aforesaid, to such person or persons
and in such manner as the said school commissioners
shall direct; and he shall keep and enter a full and
