the first day of April eighteen hundred and thirty nine, and that
one or more of the commissioners named in the original act
shall be sufficient to take subscriptions for said stock and that
Ely Balderson, Joshua Mott, Thomas Tenant and Nicholas
Gorsuch or any one or more of them shall open books by the
above limited time in the city of Baltimore, for taking subscriptions
in the said city notwithstanding any thing in the original
act to the contrary.

    2.  And be it enacted, That the government of the United
States be, and they are hereby authorised and empowered to
subscribe for shares of stock in said company upon like terms
with other subscribers.

                                            CHAPTER 97.

                    An act to Incorporate the Westminster School.

Passed Feb.
28, 1826.
    Sec. 1.  Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That John Wampler, Jacob Yingling, Washington Vanbibber,
William Durbin, Isaac Shriver, John Fisher, Jacob Mathias,
William Willis, Jacob Powder, junior, David Keiffer, Philip
Jones, Andrew Powder, John Miller, Benjamin Yingling, and
Jacob Grove, and such other persons as now are, or may hereafter
become subscribers, and their successors, be, and they
are hereby declared to be, a body corporate and politic, by the
name, style and title of the Westminster School," and by the
same name shall have perpetual succession, and shall be able
to sue and be sued, implead and be impleaded, in any court of
law or equity, in this state or elsewhere, and to make and have a
common seal, and the same to break, alter or renew at their
pleasure; and also to ordain and establish such bye-laws
and ordinances as shall appear necessary for regulating the
concerns of said school, and for promoting literature within
the same, not being repugnant to the laws of this state.
Incorporation.
    2.  And be it enacted, That the aforesaid members and their
successors, by the same name, shall be able and capable in law
to purchase, have and enjoy to them and their successors in
fee, or any other less estate or estates, any lands, tenements,
annuities, pensions, or other hereditaments within this state,
by the gift, grant, bargain, sale, alienation, enfeoffment, release
or confirmation of any person or persons, bodies corporate or
politic, capable to make the same; and such lands, tenements,
rents, annuities, pensions, or other hereditaments, or any less
estates, rights or interest of, or in the same, at their pleasure, to
grant, alien, sell and transfer in such manner and form as they
shall think meet and convenient, for the furtherance of the objects
of the said society, Provided nevertheless, That the said
body corporate and politic or association, shall not at any time
(in their said corporate capacity,) hold or possess property, real,
personal or mixed, exceeding the sum of ten thousand dollars.
