Whereas, the Exchange Loan of 1891, authorized
by chapter 305 of the Act of 1890, for the purpose of
redeeming among others the debt of the State, issued
under chapter 41, of the Acts of 1847, has not been
negotiated and issued to the amount of $202, 645. 71.
and by virtue of said non-negotiation and non-issue,
the Treasury officers have been without the funds to
redeem said overdue debt of the State, issued under
said chapter 41 of the Act of 1847; therefore,

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the sum of two hundred and two
thousand six hundred and forty-five dollars and
seventy-one cents of the money received by the State
from the United States in settlement of the claims of
the State for the Direct War Taxes, be and the same is
hereby appropriated to the payment, to that extent, of
the overdue debt of the State, issued under chapter
41 of the Acts of 1847, and the Treasurer is directed
forthwith to issue his call for the redemption of said
overdue debt in the usual form and on usual notice.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That no part of the Ex-
change Loan of 1891, provided for under chapter 305
of the Act of 1890, shall be issued to the extent of the
appropriation in the first section of this Act, but to
said extent the indebtedness of the State shall be ex-
tinguished and duly cancelled and destroyed.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That the sum of one
hundred and sixty-eight thousand six hundred and
fifty-four dollars and twelve cents, being the balance
of said sum received of the United States aforesaid,
and not hereinbefore appropriated, be and the same is
hereby appropriated to the General Sinking Fund,
and the Comptroller and Treasurer are hereby directed
and required to cause the same to be so invested for
the said General Sinking Fund and duly credited to
same.

Sec. 4. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take
effect from the date of its passage.
Which were adopted.

Said bill, as amended, was read the second time, and
ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.
