AMENDMENTS PROPOSED.
Strike out in first line of section 8, the words "one
hundred, " and insert in lieu thereof, the word
"fifty. "
Also, add the following section in the following
words: ' 'Section 9 That in addition to the sum of fifty
thousand dollars appropriated in the preceding sec-
tion, the further sum of ten thousand dollars is hereby
appropriated as a contingent fund to be under the ex-
clusive control of the Governor, and to be used by the
Governor only in case an emergency may arise which,
will require an additional amount to be expended by
the State of Maryland, for the purpose of the display
of the State of Maryland at the said World's Colum-
bian Exposition of 1893. "
Also, strike out "9" in last section, and insert in
lieu thereof "10. "
Which were adopted.
Said bill, as amended, was read the second time,
and ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.
Senate bill entitled an Act providing that the direct
war tax levied by the United States on the State of Mary-
land, and paid by the State of Maryland to the United
States, and recently refunded by the United States to
the State of Maryland, shall be credited to the De-
fence Redemption Loan of the State of Maryland, and
invested for said loan in such securities as are pro
vided by law for the investment of the securities of
the Sinking Fund.
With the following proposed amendments:

Strike out all after the word "a bill, " and insert in
lieu thereof, the following words:
"Entitled an Act to appropriate to the payment of
the outstanding overdue debt of the State, issued
under chapter 41 of the Acts of 1847, so much of the
money received of the United States in settlement of
the claims o. the State for direct taxes, as may be
necessary therefor, and to forbid the further issue of
the Exchange Loan of 1891, authorized therefor to the
extent of the debts paid, and to appropriate the bal-
ance of said Direct Taxes to the General Sinking
Fund. "
