INTRODUCTION OF RESOLUTIONS.
Mr. Hayes presented the following Joint Resolu-
tion:
JOINT RESOLUTION,
Authorizing the Governor of the State of Maryland
to receive and receipt for moneys due said State from
the General Government of the United States, on ac-
count of re-payment of the direct tax.
WHEREAS. By an Act of Congress, approved March
3rd, 1891, entitled "An Act to credit and pay to the
several States and Territories and the District of
Columbia, all moneys collected under the direct tax
levied by the Act of Congress approved August 5th,
1861, " a sum of money was appropriated to the several
States for the purpose set forth in said Act; and
Whereas, Said Act contained the following provis-
ions: ''But no money shall be paid to any State or
Territory until the Legislature thereof shall have ac-
cepted, by resolution, the sum herein appropriated
and the trusts imposed, in full satisfaction, of all claims
against the United States, on account of the levy and
collection of said tax, and shall have authorized the
Governor to receive said money for the use and pur-
poses aforesaid; now, therefore—
Be it Resolved by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the Legislature of the said State of Mary-
land hereby accepts the amount found to be due said
State under the provisions of said Act, in full satis-
faction of all claims, which said State of Maryland
may have against the United States on account of the
levy and collection of said tax; and, be it further
Resolved, That the Governor of the State of Mary
land is hereby authorized to receive and receipt in full
for said money, in accordance with the foregoing reso-
lu tions and turn the same over to the Treasury of the
State of Maryland.
