Mr. Hayes, from the Committee appointed to inquire
into the propriety and probable cost of the Senate
Chamber, presented the following
REPORT:
To the Honorable, Senate of Maryland :
The undersigned committee appointed to inquire
into the possibility, propriety and probable cost of
the restoration of the interior of the Senate Chamber
to the condition it was in when George Washington
resigned in said chamber his commission to the
National Congress, which was then in session in said
chamber, would respectfully report that they approve
of the restoration, of said chamber to its then condi-
tion and that they consider it to have been a great
misfortune that its interior arrangement was ever dis-
turbed.
The Senate Chamber of Maryland is one of the his-
toric rooms of our country, and it should, as far as
possible, present the same appearance that it did when
that memorable event in the history of our country
occurred in said chamber.
Your committee has been unable to ascertain the
actual costs of the said restoration, but are of the
opinion that it would be small.
Your committee would submit the following resolu-
tion for adoption of the Senate:
Resolved, That it is the sense of this Senate that it
would be right and proper to restore the Senate Cham-
ber of Maryland to the condition as to its interior
