CHAPTER 261.

AN ACT to more effectually protect travellers
|
 
|
against the payment of illegal tolls which may be
|
 
|
charged by any of the several turnpike companies
|
 
|
chartered under the act of eighteen hundred and
|
 
|
four, chapter fifty-one, or any supplement thereto.
|
 
|
Whereas, by the twenty-seventh section of the act
|
 
|
of eighteen hundred and four, chapter fifty-one, pro-
vision is made for imposing a penalty of twenty dol-
|
 
|
lars for each time any illegal or greater tolls than the
rate provided for in said chapter is demanded and
|

able to the county and not to the party or parties

aggrieved ; and whereas, for the purpose of affording

redress to such persons from whom such illegal toll

has been collected, this act is passed.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
|
 
|
of Maryland, That all judgments hereafter obtained
against any of the turnpike companies chartered by
the act of eighteen hundred and four, chapter fifty-
