commander-in-chief may at any time form all the said com-


panies into one or more battalion aud the battalions into


one or more regiments, as he may deem advisable ; and the


commander-in-chief may when two or more companies in


the same town shall be reduced below forty effective enlisted


men, or when in his judgment it may be deemed best for


the efficiency of the guard, consolidate them into one com-


pany and order a new organization thereof, and in addition


to the infantry commands hereinbefore provided for, the


commander-in-chief. may whenever in his judgment, the


State appropriation shall justify the expenditure, and the


efficiency of the service require it, authorize and direct


the formation of a battery of artillery of two sections and


four guns, the sections to be enlisted in the same town or


county, or one section in one town and one in another, as


the commander in-chief may direct, each section to be com-


manded by such officers as the commander -in -chief may


direct, and the whole battery to be under the command of


a captain, to be elected by both sections, the kind and cali-


bre of guns shall be designated by the commander-in -chief,


and he may in his discretion, assign one or more of the


said guns or sections to such infantry commanders as may


then be in existence to be attached to them and worked by


them as part of their service, under the officers designated


by the commander-in-chief for this duty, and the said


brigade, both infantry and artillery shall be commanded by


a brigadier-general, or in case of a vacancy by the senior


ranking officer until a brigadier-general shall be duly


elected and qualified, and the headquarters of the brigade


shall be in the City of Baltimore.


SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect


from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 574.

AN ACT to amend an act of the General Assembly of Mary-
land, passed at the January session, eighteen hundred
and ninety, chapter five hundred and five, entitled " An
act to incorporate The Baltimore, South Baltimore and
Curtis Bay Railway Company," so that the corporate title
of said corporation shall hereafter be "The Baltimore and
Curtis Bay Railway Company," and to add an additional
section to said act to be designated as section fifteen.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the act passed at the January session of the
