land in and for Anne Arundel County, John G. Crane

Preamble.

(then), sheriff of Anne Arundel County did, on the seven-


teenth day of February, eighteen hundred and eightv-eight


(having first complied with all the prerequisites of said act


of forfeiture), sell to the said John Johnson the schooner


" Anson " for violation of the oyster laws of the State of


Maryland, said Johnson being then and there the highest


bidder therefor, and


WHEREAS, subsequently said schooner was libelled by an


order out of the United States Court for the district of

Maryland at the instance of the former owner of said schooner


"Anson," and


WHEREAS, the said Johnson, Campbell and Evans had

been advised by the State's attorney for" Anne Arundel


County, Hon. James M. Monroe, that the title to said boat


was absolute, under the sale by the State of Maryland, and


dismantled said schooner in order to prevent the moving of


the same, and


WHEREAS, on this account the said Johnson, Campbell


and Evans, were arrested, tried, convicted and fined and

imprisoned for this alleged offence and paid said fine and


were imprisoned until released by His Excellency Grover


Cleveland, President of the United States, and


WHEREAS, said Johnson being ignorant of the conse-


quences of such dismantling of said schooner, and under

what he believed to be the instructions of James M. Monroe,


Esquire, State's attorney for Anne Arundel County, he feels


that the State of Maryland is in justice bound to recompense


him for his expenditure and loss by the purchase by him of


the said schooner " Anson," under the laws of the State, as


also for the loss of time by himself, and also for the loss of


time by James Campbell and Thomas Evans paid for by


him, therefore,


SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of

Maryland, That the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars be,

and the same is hereby appropriated to pay the claim of


John Johnson, James Campbell and Thomas Evans, and the


Comptroller of the Treasury is hereby empowered and


directed to draw his warrant on the treasurer, to the order


of John Johnson, for said sum of monev, the same to be


paid out of any money in the treasury not otherwise


appropriated.


SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect
