JOINT RESOLUTIONS.


Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be immediately

transmitted by his excellency, the governor, to each of our sena-


tors in the congress of the United States.


No. 12.




Joint resolutions requesting the legislature of the common-


wealth of Virginia to pass an act compensating Stewart H. Evans,


owner of the schooner Hance Lawson, for damages incurred in.


the sinking of said schooner by the titgboat "Ida Augusta," and


B. H. Leach, owner of the schooner David N. Taylor, for damages


incurred by said schooners being run into by the tugboat "Ida


Augusta," in the Potomac river, on the twenty- seventh day of


November, eighteen hundred and eighty-nine.


WHEREAS, on November twenty-seventh, A. D. eighteen hundred


and eighty-nine, the schooner Hance Lawson, owned by Stewart

H. Evans, of Somerset county, was run into and sunk; and


schooner David N. Taylor, owned by B. H. Leach, Baltimore,


Maryland, was run into and greatly damaged by the tugboat


"Ida Augusta," while said schooner was lawfiilly engaged in


taking oysters in the Potomac river, and within the limits of


the State of Maryland; and


WHEREAS, the said tugboat "Ida Augusta," was acting under

orders from the authorities of the commonwealth of Virginia ;


and

WHEREAS, such action was wholly illegal and unwarranted;
and


WHEREAS, it is the opinion of this general assembly that the said


commonwealth of Virginia should at once repair the injuries


done by the sinking and running into of said schooners so far

as possible, and repay to said Stewart H. Evans, owner of said


schooner Hance Lawson, and B. H. Leach, owner of said


schooner David N. Taylor, the value of said sunken schooner


and the cargo and the cost of damage done by the running into


of said schooner David N. Taylor; therefore,


Be it resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the


governor of this State be requested to bring the subject recited in

the following preamble, to the attention of the governor of Vir-
