LAWS OF MARYLAND.


SEC. 13. The council may, whenever they think the public in-


terest requires it, cause an assessment to be made of all real and


personal property within the corporate limits of said town sub-


ject to assessment for county or State taxes, and they may pre-


scribe the manner in which such assessment shall be made, and


provide for adjusting all differences in relation to such assess-

ment

ment; providing such assessment shall not exceed the assessment


for State and county purposes; and, provided, further, that no


land included within the corporate limits or corporate out-


lines of said town, except houses and gardens shall be taxed


for corporate purposes so long as said land shall be used for agri-


cultural purposes; and the council may levy a tax on the assess-


able property within the corporate limits of, said town, not exceed-


ing in any one year thirty cents in the one hundred dollars worth


of assessable property.


SEC. 14. Any person may appeal from the valuation made by

the assessor to the council at their next regular or quarterly


meeting, and such council shall remain in session as long as may


be reasonable to hear and determine such appeals, and shall give


reasonable notice of such meeting and may abate or increase the


assessment as may seem just.


SEC. 15. Whenever the council shall levy a tax they shall cause

to be made out an alphabetical list of the persons to be charged


therewith, and shall cause to be affixed thereto the respective


sums to be collected from each person, and a warrant to the


bailiff to collect the same.


SEC. 16. The bailiff appointed by the council may enforce the

payment of corporation taxes in the same manner and with like


effect as collectors of State and county taxes may enforce the


payment of State and county taxes.


SEC. 17. The bailiff shall make all collections required of him

and pay the same to the clerk in six months from the time the

together with all the moneys received by him subject to the order


of the council.


SEC. 18. The bailiff shall attend the meetings of the council

ordinances that may be enacted by the council.


SEC. 19. The bailiff shall have the same fees for making dis-


tresses or levying execution for taxes as are allowed county col-

lectors; and for making arrests or serving process for violation


of any ordinance of the corporation, the same fees as are allowed


constables for similar services; and when the bailiff wilfully fails


to discharge any duty of his office he may, m addition to the


remedy on his bond, be fined by the mayor in his discretion not.
