other causes, and shall have power to temporarily increase the

number of police and to temporarily appoint police from April to
|
|
|
|
October, when in their judgment, the peace or safety of the town
|
|
|
|
demand them; they shall arrange the police force so that a part
|
|
|
|
of them shall be on duty during each day, and a part of them on
|
|
|

duty during each night; and the said police board shall furnish

the police with proper arms and a badge of office, that the police
|
|
|
|
shall wear exposed on the left breast of their coat; and the said
|
|
|
|
board of police commissioners shall have power and authority to
|
|
|
|
make and pass such by-laws, rules and regulations governing the
|
|
|
|
police appointed by them, as in their judgment shall best insure
|
|
|
|
the efficiency of the force and preserve the peace of the town, and
|
|
|
|
direct how the town shall be patrolled by said police, so that at
|
|
|
|
least one policeman shall be in the vicinity of Cambridge harbor
|
|
|
|
and bridge over the same; and the said police commissioners shall
|
|
|
|
allow each policeman for the faithful performance of his duties
|
|
|
|
not less than twenty-five dollars per month, and at the expiration
|
|
|

of each month's service of a policeman the said board of police
|
|
|
|
commissioners, or a majority of them, shall give to said police-
|
|
|
|
man an order on the town clerk and treasurer of Cambridge for
|
|
|
|
the month's pay of said policeman, which said order shall be paid

|
in cash on presentation to said clerk and treasurer.

|
|
SEC. 60. And be it enacted, That at their first meeting, or as
|
|
|
|
soon thereafter as may be convenient, they shall appoint one or
|
|
|
|
more bailiffs, who shall receive such compensation f or their services
|
|
|
|
as may be determined by the said commissioners, and said bailiffs
|
|
|
|
shall be peace officers within the limits of said town, and it shall
|
|
|
|
be their duty to prevent breaches of the peace, to make arrests,
|
|
|
|
to go upon the premises of parties suspected of violating any pro-
|
|
|

vision or provisions of this act, or any ordinance or by-law of said

bailiff

commissioners of Cambridge, and to serve process for the enforce-
|
|
|
|
ment of penalties, fines, &c., for violation of any provisions of this
|
|
|
|
act, or any ordinance or by-law passed in pursuance thereof, as
|
|
|
|
well as such other duties as are prescribed and defined by section
|
|
|
|
forty-seven of this article, herein made applicable to said bailiffs
|
|
|
|
as well as policemen; and it shall also be their duty to collect all
|
|
|
|
taxes levied upon any dogs kept within the corporate limits, and
|
|
|
|
perform such other duties as shall be prescribed by said commis-
|
|
|
|
sioners.

SEC. 62. And be it enacted, That every bailiff before he enters
|
|
|

or in his absence, some one of the commissioners, faithfully and
|

impartially to discharge the duties of his office without favor,
