CHAPTER 311.


AN ACT to repeal section eighty-three, of article ten, of the


Code of Public Local Laws, title " Dorchester county," sub-


title " Cambridge," and to re-enact the same with amendments.

Repeal.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That section eighty-three, of article 10, of the Code of Public


Local Laws, title " Dorchester county," sub-title " Cambridge,"


be and the same is hereby repealed, and the following enacted in


lieu thereof:


SEC. 83. That for the purpose of securing a full and perma-


nent supply of water for the said town and inhabitants thereof,

and the erection of water works in said town, the commissioners


thereof are hereby authorized and empowered, in their discretion,


to subscribe for and become stockholders in any water company


now in existence, or that may- hereafter be incorporated in said


town, or said commissioners, in their discretion, may enter into a


contract with any water company for the supply of water to said


town, with full power as to terms and details of said contract, ex-


cept as herein restricted, and may grant permission to any water


company to lay pipes in the beds of the streets in said town, at

the expense and liability of said company, for all damage or in-

supply

jury to the streets or private property done in laying said pipes ;


provided, no contract for a water supply shall exceed in duration


twenty-five years, and the said commissioners may annually levy


in addition to the present tax limits, a tax not exceeding ten cents


in the hundred dollars, upon the taxable property of the town, to


be applied to the payment of the water supplied by any company


with which the said commissioners may contract, or to provide


interest and a sinking fund for any bonds not exceeding five thou-
sand dollars, which the commissioners are hereby empowered to


issue, should the said commissioners of Cambridge become stock-


holders in any water company organized as aforesaid; and the


powers here conferred upon said commissioners as to making con-


tracts for water supply, shall be and shall also apply to their


making of contracts for the lighting of the streets of said town


with gas or other methods of illumination.


SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect from
