SEC. 14. And be it enacted, That they may allow their clerk,


treasurer, bailiff and police such reasonable compensation for

their services as they may think proper, and the mayor shall re-


ceive a salary of ten dollars, ($10,) and each councilman a salary


of five dollars, ($5,) per annum for attending to the duties of their


respective offices.


SEC. 15. And be it enacted, That the mayor and councilmen


shall pass such ordinances, not contrary t'o law, as they may deem


beneficial to the town; they shall have power to remove nuisances


and obstructions from the streets, lanes and alleys and from any

lot adjoining thereto, and also any houses or other buildings that


may become dangerous to the neighborhood on any account, and


to prevent and abate all nuisances and annoyances in said town,


and may impose such reasonable fines, forfeitures or imprison-


ments as to them may appear necessary for violation of any ordi-


nance of the said town.


SEC. 16. And be it enacted, That they may from time to time,

prevented by sickness or unavoidable accident, shall each forfeit

the party appealing or any other person on oath, touching the


particulars or value of the property assessed, and may reduce or


increase the assessment as may seem just.


SEC. 18. And be it enacted, That whenever they shall levy a tax
