be performed, the use, safe keeping, due return of all property
placed in his charge, and the proper disposal of all monies coming
into his hands for road purposes.

1870, ch. 294.

160. If in the construction and repair of the public roads of
the county it be necessary for their proper drainage, it shall be
lawful for the supervisors or other road officers of the county to.
let off the water therefrom upon the adjoining lands, at such
places as may be proper and necessary; provided, it shall be done
with as little injury as possible to the owners of said lands, and
provided the drains through such lands be continued so as to pre-
vent the spreading of the water so let off the roads over cultivated
fields.

161. If a person shall obstruct, fill up or otherwise wilfully
injure the drains made for conducting the water from the public
roads, or shall encroach upon any public roads by fences or other
obstructions, or dig any ditch or drain across any road, and fail
to keep such ditch or drain well covered and in good repair for
the passage of vehicles over the same, or if any person shall drain
any water into or upon any public road, each and every such per-
son, for every such offence, shall be subject to a fine for the use
of the county, of not less than ten nor more than one hundred
dollars.

162. It shall not be lawful for any person, with or without
the consent of the county commissioners, to erect, have or keep
any gate upon the public roads of Charles county, and the road
supervisors of said county shall cause all gates to be removed
therefrom in their respective districts.

1876, ch. 291.

163. Any person who shall in any way or manner hinder,
molest, obstruct or disturb any supervisor in the performance of
the duties required of him under the provisions of the preceding
section, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and be liable to
presentment and indictment by the grand jury, and shall on
conviction thereof in a court of law, be fined in the sum not less.
