954 CHARLES COUNTY. [ART. 0.

ROADS AND BRIDGES.

1886, ch. 194.

157. It shall be the duty of the county commissioners to
provide for the repairs of all the public roads and bridges of the
county, and for that purpose they shall levy upon the assessable
property of the county, and pay the expenditures for such repairs,
and all incidental expenses arising therefrom; provided, however,
they shall not expend for such purpose in any one year more than
the sum of eight thousand dollars; and they shall divide the-
county into road districts, and the roads into sections, and appoint
supervisors over the same, not exceeding five in number, at an
annual compensation to be fixed by them, not to exceed the sum.
of three hundred dollars for any ono year; said supervisors to
hold their offices during the term of office of the county commis-
sioners, and until their successors are appointed; and i't shall be
the duty of said supervisors to keep in repair the roads and
bridges of the county, under the direction and regulation of the
county commissioners; for any neglect of duty, they shall he-
subject to removal from office, and to deduction from their com-
pensation by the county commissioners, and for that or any other
malfeasance in office, they shall be also liable to indictment in.
the circuit court for said county.

158. The wages allowed for the payment of laborers hired to
work on said roads, shall not exceed one dollar per day; and it
shall be the duty of the county commissioners to provide for the
payment of said laborers within one month after said work has.
been rendered.

1874, ch. 493.

159. The county commissioners, if in their discretion they
deem it expedient, may make provision for the employment of
one or more permanent corps of laborers, not exceeding nine
corps for the county, for the repair of the roads and bridges in
the county, under the supervision of an officer of sufficient skill
and experience for the purpose; and they shall require any
officer appointed for such purpose to give bond in such penalty
and with such security as they may fix and approve, and with
such conditions as they may prescribe in regard to the duties to
