24 ALLEGANY COUNTY. [ART. 1.

and registered as provided in section 71, on the third Mon-
day of May, in every second year, accounting from the year
eighteen hundred and seventy-eight, shall elect by ballot a person
of known integrity, experience and sound judgment, not less
than thirty years of age, ten years a citizen of the United States
and five years a resident of said city next preceding the election,
and owning property in said city to the value of one thousand
dollars, to be mayor of said city; and the person so elected at each
of said elections shall serve as such mayor for the term of two
years from the first Monday of June next succeeding his election.

51. The city council shall consist of eleven members, five of
whom shall be elected at large on the third Monday in May, in
every alternate year accounting from the year eighteen hundred
and seventy-eight, to serve for the term of two years from the
first Monday in June next succeeding their election, and six
members, one from each ward, who shall be elected from the
respective wards on the third Monday in May in every alternate
year, commencing with the year eighteen hundred and seventy-
nine. The members of said city council shall all be citizens of
the United States, of the age of twenty-five years or upwards,
residents of the city three years next preceding their election;
and those elected from the wards shall be residents of the ward
from which they are elected for ninety days prior to the election.
The qualifications of the electors of said city council shall be the
same as those of the mayor, and each elector shall be a resident
of the ward in which he may offer to vote for not less than thirty
days next preceding the election at which he may offer to vote.

52. All members of the said city council shall actually be
possessed of property to the amount in value of five hundred
dollars and shall be assessed therefor on the books of the city
at the time of their election.
