2120 WORCESTER COUNTY. [ART. 24.

collector of the public county assessment has to distrain for the
same; and the said president and commissioners shall fix the
term of office and amount of bond and compensation of such
collector.

38. As often as deemed advisable, they may cause an assess-
ment to be made of all real and personal property within the
corporate limits, by a person to be appointed and paid by them,
which assessment shall not exceed the assessment of the same
property for county purposes; and the commissioners may levy a
tax thereon, not exceeding in any one year twenty cents in the
one hundred dollars worth of assessable property.

39. They shall have full power and authority, annually, to
appoint a bailiff, whose duty it shall be to preserve the peace and
good order of said town, and for this purpose he is vested with
the same power and authority that constables have under the
laws of this State.

40. The bailiff shall have the same fees for making arrests or
serving process for violation of any ordinance of the corporation
as are allowed constables for similar services.

41. The commissioners, and all other officers of the corpo-
ration, before entering upon the duties of their respective offices,
shall take an oath before a justice of the peace, that they will
diligently and faithfully, to the best of their judgment, discharge
the duties thereof without favor, partiality or prejudice, and shall
file the certificate of the officer before whom such oath was taken,
among the records of the corporation.

42. The clerk and bailiff shall give bond, payable to the com-
missioners, in such penalty and with such security as they may
require, conditioned for the faithful performance of the duties of
their respective offices.
