ROADS.

1886, ch. 886.

191. The county commissioners shall have power, and it shall
be their duty, to provide for the repair of all public roads and
bridges in said county, and to that end may adopt any mode or
system they may deem most expedient for the purpose, and may
levy upon the assessable property of the county and pay the
expenditures for such repairs and all incidental expenses arising
therefrom; provided, such expenditures shall not exceed the sum
of fifteen thousand dollars for the annual repairs of roads and
five thousand dollars for the permanent improvement of the same
by shells, gravel, stone or other hard material; and they may
divide the county into road districts, not to exceed tive in any
election district, and may appoint supervisors or other road offi-
cers over the same, at such fixed compensation as they may
prescribe, who shall execute a bond to the State of Maryland,
with two good sureties to be approved by the county commis-
sioners, and in such penalty as the said commissioners may
require for the faithful performance of his duties; and it shall
be the duty of such supervisors or other officers to keep in repair
the roads and bridges of said county, under the direction and
regulation of said commissioners; for any neglect of which duty,
in the judgment of the commissioners, they shall be subject to
removal from office, and for that or any other malfeasance in
office, shall be also liable to indictment in the circuit court for.
said county.

192. The county commissioners shall keep a separate account
of all expenses incurred for opening, constructing, improving or
repairing the public roads in each election district thereof. And
they shall provide for the payment of said road expenses by levy--
ing upon the assessable property in each election district of said
county a tax sufficient to pay the said expenses incurred as afore-
said for the opening, improvement, construction and repair of the
public roads in the respective election districts of said county.
And they shall not levy any road tax upon the assessable property
in any election district of said county, except to pay for the open-
ing, construction, improvement and repair of the public roads of
said county in such election district; provided, however, that
