1878, ch. 108.

35. They shall have power to appoint a clerk, who shall give
bond to the State of Maryland, in the penalty of one thousand
dollars, to be approved by the commissioners, conditioned for the
faithful performance of the duties of his office, which bond shall
be recorded in the office of the clerk of the circuit court for said
county.

36. The said clerk shall take and subscribe the following oath
before one of the commissioners: "I, ——, do swear that as clerk
to the county commissioners of Garrett county, I will honestly
and faithfully, to the best of my skill and judgment, execute the
duties of said office without fear, affection, prejudice or partial-
ity."

37. He is authorized and empowered to administer an oath or
affirmation to any person presenting a claim to the commissioners
against said county, to any person filing any paper with the com-
missioners to which an affidavit is required by law, and to any
person who is to be examined as a witness in any matter before
the commissioners, for which service the clerk shall not be
entitled to make any charge, the same being made a part of his
official duty as clerk; and he shall be entitled to such compensa-
tion as shall be fixed by the commissioners, not exceeding four
hundred dollars for any one year.

38. The county commissioners shall direct the supervisors of
roads to erect and keep up at the expense of the county, at all
public cross-roads and where public roads fork, indexes or finger
boards pointing to the nearest town, mill or other public place to
which said roads lead, with the names of the places and distances
thereto legibly inscribed thereon, and the expense thereof shall be
levied as other county charges.
