it shall be to safely keep said books, and permit no person to have
access to them, except in his presence or in the presence of one of
his deputies, until the morning of election, when the said register
shall deliver to the judges of election for each ward the book of
registration of said ward; and the said register of Frederick city
shall take and subscribe an affidavit, written in each of said books,
proving the same to be the book delivered to him by the officer
of registration of the ward, and by him delivered to the judges of
election to whom it is given; and at the same time the said register
of Frederick city shall deliver to the judges of election of the re-
spective wards an accurate list of the names of the resident voters
of their respective wards, with their color and residence placed
opposite their respective names, to be need as the list to be voted
from and checked off.

166. It shall be the duty of said officers of registration of the
respective wards to cause a list of the qualified voters in their re-
spective wards of the city to be published in at least one news-
paper in Frederick city and in hand-bill form, and to have the
registry list of each ward posted up in at least five of the most
public places in said ward for at least five days before the second
Monday of February in each year, and said lists shall state the
name of each and every registered voter of said ward, and state
opposite the name of each whether white or colored; and any
person who shall erase from or add to any of said lists of qualified
voters, after the officer of registration shall have delivered the said
books of registration to the register of Frederick city, before and
pending the election next ensuing, shall be guilty of a misde-
meanor, and liable to presentment and indictment in the circuit
court for Frederick county, and on conviction thereof shall be
confined in the penitentiary of the State of Maryland for a period
of not exceeding five years.

167. The officers of registration appointed under this sub-title
of this article shall be entitled to receive three dollars per day
for each and every day in which they shall be actually engaged
in registering voters entitled to vote within the taxable limits of
Frederick city; and the mayor and aldermen of Frederick city
