5. The board of directors shall annually appoint an assistant
warden, a bookkeeper, physician, and matron, and as many superin-
tendents, deputy keepers, guards, or other officers, as they may deem
necessary for the service of the institution, and shall also regulate
and determine their respective salaries and duties as far as may be
consistent with law, or the rules hereinafter established, and shall
prescribe the oaths to be taken by all the officers, or other persons
officially connected with the institution, before entering upon their
respective duties.

the oath prescribed by said directors, swear falsely, he shall, upon
conviction thereof in. due course of law, suffer as in cases of wilful

7. The warden and the other officers, guards, and superintendents
employed in the penitentiary, before entering upon the discharge of
their respective duties, shall execute bonds to the State with secu-
rity to be approved by the board of directors, and in no manner "
connected with the management of said penitentiary, the warden in
the sum of ten thousand dollars, and the other officers, guards, and
superintendents in such penalty and with such security as the board
of directors may deem proper, conditioned for the faithful perform-
ance of the duties required of them respectively by the laws of this
State, and the rules and regulations that may be adopted from time
to time for the government of the said penitentiary, and the said
bonds shall be filed in the executive department of the State, and a
certified copy thereof, under the seal of the State, shall be evidence
in actions on said bonds or any of them; and if either of the officers
aforesaid shall neglect to execute bond as herein prescribed, or
neglect to take the oath prescribed by the directors, within twenty
days after notice of his or her appointment, another person shall be
appointed in place of the said delinquent.

8. The directors shall fix the amount of the salaries to be paid to
the deputy warden, police and other officers, guards, and superin-
tendents employed in the penitentiary, shall define their respective
duties, and take from them respectively the bond required by the
preceding section.

9. The warden shall receive a salary at the rate of two thousand
dollars per year, and shall be allowed subsistence, fuel, and the oc-
cupancy of such parts of the front buildings as a dwelling as are
not used for purposes of the penitentiary, and all necessary out-
