10. The directors shall receive two dollars each, for every day
they may necessarily attend in the discharge of their duties as direc-
tors, or in the capacity of monthly committee, as hereinafter pro-
vided; but when they attend in both capacities on the same day,
they shall not receive more than one day's pay.

12, The name and corporate style of the institution shall be
" The Directors of the Maryland Penitentiary," and by that name
the said directors shall have power to institute any suit or suits for
any sums of money due the institution, for any injury done to the
property or effects of the institution, or for the breach of any con-
tract made with the said directors in their official capacity, or on
the official bonds of any officer who shall commit a breach thereof,
and to prosecute said suits to judgment and execution.

13, All deeds for the sale of real or leasehold estate held by the
institution, shall be signed by the president of the board, or any
three of the directors appointed for the purpose, at a meeting of the

14. The directors, warden, assistant warden, and all other officers
of the said penitentiary, shall perform and discharge the duties that
may be assigned to them respectively by this article, or by the rules
and regulations of the board of directors, not inconsistent with the
provisions of law or the rules and regulations hereinafter established ;
and if any of them wilfully omit or refuse to discharge any duty ap-
pertaining to his office, after having accepted the said appointment,
he shall be dismissed from office, and be subject to a fine of not less

than thirty nor more than five hundred dollars, to be recovered at
the instance of the said directors, in the name of the State, for the
use of the said penitentiary, before any justice of the peace or court
having jurisdiction, as debts are collected.

15. No person having any official connection with the said in-
stitution shall be directly or indirectly concerned or interested in
any contract, purchase or sale of anything for, by or on account of
the said prison, nor shall they sell to, nor purchase from the said
prison, or its authorities, any article whatever; and any person so
offending shall be immediately dismissed from his employment, and
on conviction, be subject to a fine of five hundred dollars, to be recov-
ered as other fines are; and the said directors and other officers are
hereby required to make report to the board of directors of all such
offences coming to their knowledge, and a failure or neglect shall be
