shall be, ex-officio, collector of the town tax, and shall
within said town have all the authority of a constable.

 

138. The said bailiff shall give bond, to be approved
by the county commissioners, as other constables, for
the faithful performance of his duty as constable, and
also bond to the said president and commissioners for
the faithful performance of his duty as town bailiff,
and as collector of the town taxes, and the faithful
performance of such duties as may be imposed on him
by the ordinances of said president and commissioners.

139. The said bailiff may enforce the payment of
town taxes, in the same manner, and with the like
effect, as collector of state and county taxes may en-
force the payment of state and county taxes.

140. The president of the said commissioners shall,
in virtue of his office, have and exercise, within the
limits of said town, all the jurisdiction and power of a
justice of the peace, except as to the recovery of small

trusted with the receipt and expenditures of public
money, for a statement of his accounts as often as he
shall see proper, he shall see that the ordinances are
faithfully executed, and report to the town commis-
sioners at their stated meetings the general state of the
town, and may call special meetings of the commis-
sioners whenever he may deem proper.

141. And the said president and commissioners
may provide for the purchase of a lot and the erec-
tion thereon of a public building, to be used as a town
hall for the benefit of the citizens of said village; and
the expense attending the purchase of said lot and
erection of said building shall be levied upon the
assessable property of said village in the same man-
ner and collected as other town taxes are levied, as-
sessed and collected.

142. All fines imposed by said president and com-
missioners shall be collected in the same manner as
small debts.
