RICHARD W. HOOK.
AN ACT to allow Richard W. Hook, former sheriff and collector of taxes for Balti-
more county, further time to complete his collections.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Richard W. Hook, former sheriff of Baltimore county, and collec-
tor of State and county taxes for the year eighteen hundred and fifty-
seven, for said county, be and he is hereby authorized and empowered
to collect any taxes or balances of taxes, now remaining due to, and
uncollected by him in the county aforesaid, in the same manner and
with the same power and privilege as are allowed to collectors in said
county, according to the provisions of sections fifty-nine, sixty, and
sixty-one, of Article three, of the Code of Public Local Laws.
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said Richard W. Hook, shall
in every instance, before he shall proceed to the aforesaid collection,
make affidavit before some justice of the peace for Baltimore. county,
that the same remains unpaid, and that he has not received any security
or satisfaction for the same, or any part thereof, more than the credits
allowed thereon; provided, that said affidavit shall not be held to be
conclusive evidence of indebtedness to said collector, but merely prima
facie evidence of said indebtedness. '
SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That this act shall not continue in force
longer than one year from the date of its passage.
SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect from its
passage.
DAVID KNOTTS.
AN ACT for the relief of David Knotts, one of the securities upon the official bond of
Alexander Knotts, late Sheriff of Caroline county.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That David Knotts one of the sureties on the bond of Alexander Knotts,
late Sheriff of Caroline county, which bond is now in suit in the Circuit
court for Caroline county, be and he is hereby released from all respon-
sibility to the State of Maryland on account of said bond; provided,
however, that the said David Knotts, shall not be released from liabili-
ties thereunder unless he shall pay to the Treasurer of the State on or
before the first day of November next, one-fifth part of the amount now-
due the State by the said Alexander Knotts, sheriff, upon the judgment
rendered against him in the court aforesaid; and provided further,
that nothing herein contained shall be construed to release the said
Alexander Knotts from the payment of the said judgment to the State,
nor any other of the sureties upon the bond of the said Alexander
Knotts.
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect from its
passage.
