CHAPTER 623.
(Senate Bill 242)
AN ACT to propose an amendment to Article 38 of the
Declaration of Rights of the Constitution of Maryland,
relating to the consent of the General Assembly to
certain gifts, grants, deeds, devises and bequests for
religious purposes and to provide for the submission of
said amendment to the qualified voters of the State of
Maryland for adoption or rejection.
SECTION 1. Belt enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland
(three-fifths of all the members of each of the two Houses
concurring), That the following be and the same is hereby
proposed as an amendment to Article 38 of the Declaration
of Rights of the Constitution of the State of Maryland,
the same, if adopted by the legally qualified voters of the
State, as herein provided, to become Article 38 of the
Declaration of Rights of the Constitution of the State of
Maryland.
Article 38. That every gift, sale or devise of land to
any Minister, Public Teacher or Preacher of the Gospel,
as such, or to any Religious Sect, Order or Denomination
or to, or for the support, use or benefit of, or in trust for,
any Minister, Public Teacher, or Preacher of the Gospelr
as such, or any Religious Sect, Order or Denomination;
and every gift or sale of goods, or chattels to go in succes-
sion, or to take place after the death of the Seller or
Donor, to or for such support, use or benefit; and also
every devise of goods or chattels to or for the support, use
or benefit of any Minister, Public Teacher or Preacher of
the Gospel, as such, or any Religious Sect, Order or De-
nomination, without the prior or subsequent sanction of
