years, a freeholder in the city, within the taxable limits thereof, actually
residing therein, and having resided therein for three years next preced-
ing his election.

203. The Mayor shall keep open an office in such part of the city as
shall be suitable and convenient for preserving the peace and order of
the city, and he may appoint at discretion special constables for extra
services, not exceeding twenty, whose duty it shall be to aid him in pre-
serving the peace, order and quiet of the city, and he shall make the con-
stables thus appointed such compensation out of the funds of the city as
shall be suitable and proper.

204. The Mayor shall receive in lieu of fees an annual salary of six
hundred dollars, payable quarterly in equal instalments, which sum shall
be his total compensation. He shall annually, immediately before mak-
ing out the tax levy for each year, and as much oftener as he shall deem
necessary, examine into and audit the accounts of the city register, and
shall report the result of his examination, in writing, to the Board of
Aldermen, who shall preserve such reports and record the same among
the minutes of their proceedings. The term of office of the person elected
Mayor shall begin on the first Monday next after his election and shall

continue until his successor in office is duly elected and qualified.

205. He may take the acknowledgment of any deed or instrument of
writing required by law to be acknowledged, and any acknowledgment so
taken by him shall be valid, and he shall receive therefor the sum of
fifty cents.

206. He may call upon any officer of the city entrusted with the receipt
and expenditure of public money for a statement of his accounts as often
as he or the corporation may conceive it necessary.

cuted, and shall report annually to the corporation during the first five
