from the bailiff, or who appears and fails or refuses to work and render
service as by the person or persons supervising the work he is required
and instructed, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and on conviction there-
of before a justice of the peace or in the Circuit Court for Dorchetser
County, such person shall be fined one dollar and shall be adjudged to
pay the costs, and to stand committed to the jail until fine and costs are
paid, and he shall still be bound to render said services. Any person who
pays to the bailiff for the use of the town the sum of one dollar in lieu
of rendering personal services on said streets and highways shall receive
a receipt therefor from said bailiff exempting him from work and service
on said highways and streets for the term of one year, as the year is here-
in defined. The Commissioners shall have the power and authority to
pass the necessary ordinances to enable them to enforce the provisions
hereof and providing systematic arrangements in respect thereto.*

1892, ch. 350, sec. 1.

496. That the trustees of the Cambridge Female Seminary, the trus-
tees of the Cambridge Academy, and the Board of County School Com-
missioners of Dorchester County are hereby authorized to enter into such
a contract and arrangement, by lease or otherwise, for the appropriation
to their joint use, of the grounds, buildings and property, belonging to the
said Cambridge Female Seminary, and for the use for school purposes,
of the grounds, buildings and property belonging to the said Cambridge
Academy, as the said respective parties shall respectively deem most
conducive to the best interests of the schools under their respective charge;
provided, however, that no use shall be made of any of said grounds,
buildings or property, except for school purposes.

497. The trustees of the said Cambridge Female Seminary, the trus-
tees of the said Cambridge Academy, and the said Board of County Com-
missioners of Dorchester County, may unite in the selection of one or
more of the teachers to teach in the said seminary, academy, and in the
schools under the charge of the said Board of County School Commis-
sioners of Dorchester County, and arrange for the payment of their
salaries, and may arrange that one or more of the said teachers shall teach
in said seminary, said academy, and in the schools under the charge of
said Board of County School Commissioners of Dorchester County.

498. Any contract or contracts heretofore entered into between the
trustees of the said Cambridge Female Seminary, the said Cambridge
Academy, and the said Board of County 'School Commissioners of Dor-
