REPORT

OF THE

COMPTROLLER OF THE TREASURY

OF THE

STATE OF MARYLAND

September 19, 1950.
To THE HONORABLE

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND

In compliance with the provisions of Section 9 of Article 19
of the Annotated Code of Maryland, I am submitting herewith a
report of the fiscal activities of the State for the year ended June
30, 1950.

This report is for a period during which my predecessor, the
late James J. Lacy, who died July 1, 1950, was Comptroller. Upon
the death of Mr. Lacy, Governor Lane, on July 5, 1950, honored
me by appointing .me Comptroller to fill out the unexpired term
for which Mr. Lacy had been elected.

I am giving below in summary form figures as at June 30, 1950
around which our whole fiscal picture revolves:

The Cash Balance was .................................. $37,246,380.31

The General Fund Surplus was.......................... 7,448,391.07

The Receipts for the fiscal year 1950 were as follows:
General Fund.......................... $73,721,240.52

Special Fund, etc................... 112,967,931.84

Loan and Other Funds.......... 40,431,996.79

Total.............................................. $227,121,169.15

The Disbursements for the fiscal year 1950 were as follows:
General Fund.......................... $72,102,367.97

Special Fund, etc................... 109,999,908.32

Loan and Other Funds.. 48,138,278.19

Total. ... .......................... . $230,240,554.48

The Bonded Debt was....... ....................... $32,846,000.00

The Cash Balance in the Annuity Bond Fund
was............................................................ $4,260,980.47

Upon reviewing the work of the office for the last fiscal year I
find many items of interest and I feel that mention of some of them
is in order in this letter of submission of the report.

The set-up of the department during the past year was sub-
stantially the same as for the preceding year, that is, the duties
devolving upon the department remained about the same, although
