Passed Feb.5, 1836

An act to incorporate the Atlantic Company of Baltimore,

Corporation crea-

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of

ted and empowered

Maryland, That William Lorman, Henry Thompson,

 

Hugh Birckhead, Daniel Cohb, John Gibson, Joseph

 

King, Junior, Henry P. Sumner, William F. Murdoch,

 

George C. Morton, and such other persons as shall be-

 

come stockholders in the corporation hereinafter men-

 

tioned, their successors and. assigns, shall be and are

 

hereby made and created a body corporate and politic,

 

by the name and style of the Atlantic Company of

 

Baltimore, and by that name shall have succession, and

 

be capable in law to hold and dispose of property, to

 

sue and be sued, to plead and be impleaded, answer

 

and defend, and be answered and defended, in any court

 

of record, or in any place whatsoever; to receive and

 

make deeds or contracts; to make, have and use a

 

common seal, and the same to change, alter or renew

 

at pleasure, and generally to pass all such by-laws as

 

may be necessary to regulate its affairs; and do all such

 

acts as shall be proper and necessary for the purpose

of establishing and conducting a line or lines of steam

 

ships or other vessels, for the conveyance of passengers

 

and property, on the ocean, to and from Baltimore, or

 

elsewhere.

Capital stock

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the capital stock

 

of said corporation, shall be divided into shares of one

 

hundred dollars each, and shall not exceed five thou-

 

sand shares, unless augmented in the manner herein-

 

after provided; and that the persons above named, or

Subscriptions —

any three of them, may and shall receive subscriptions

notice

for said shares, or such part thereof as they shall deem

 

necessary to commence the business of the said corpo-

 

ration, first giving ten days previous notice in at least

 

two newspapers published in the city of Baltimore, of

 

the time and place within said city for receiving said

 

subscriptions, which shall be made subject to such

 

rules, limitations and terms, as shall he prescribed in

 

said notice; and that every body or person that shall

 

be the proprietor of one or more shares of the aforesaid
