The Senate bill entitled an Act to encourage Immigration
to the State of Maryland, as

Reported by Mr. Stevens from the Committee on Labor and
Immigration.

Mr. Earle moved a call of the Senate,
When the following Senators responded :

Messrs. President, Aydelott, Blake, Brewer, Claggett,
Davis, Earle, Getty, Knight, Longwell, Lloyd, Mudd,
McCulloh, Phelps, Stevens, Steiner, Spencer, Tuck, Wil-
liams—19.

The Sergeant-at-Arms was sent to notify absent Senators
that their presence was requested in the Senate Chamber.

On motion by Mr. Brewer,

Further proceedings unclei the call were suspended.
Pending the consideration of the said bill,

Mr. Stevens submitted the following amendment to the
bill reported from the Select Committee :

Amend by striking out all after the words "A Bill" and
insert "Entitled an Act to encourage Immigration to the
State of Maryland."

"SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the Governor, the President of the State Agricul-
tural and Mechanical Society of Maryland and three other
persons, citizens of Maryland, the latter to be appointed by
the Governor, and to serve for two years, shall constitute a
Board of Immigration for the purpose of taking all necessa-
ry steps to direct Immigration to the State of Maryland."

"SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That said Board of Immigra-
tion shall select one or more intelligent and responsible per-
son or persons for the purpose of collecting such information
as may be conducive to attract capital and honest and indus-
trious people to Maryland. Such information to be pub-
lished in such languages, and in such form as the Board
may deem proper, and to embrace a full description of the
price and location of lands, the wages paid in Maryland, the
agricultural, mechanical, mineral and other resources, the
facilities of navigation, railroads, churches, schools, markets,
etc., etc. ; said person or persons to be remunerated, and all
expenses incurred by the printing and distributing of such
information to be paid by the Board of Immigration out of
the funds hereinafter provided for."

"SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the Board of Immigra-
tion shall meet on the first Wednesday of April and Oeto-
