Mr. Earle then submitted the following message to the
House of Delegates:

BY THE SENATE,

January 20th, 1874.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates :

We have had under careful consideration your Joint Reso-
lutions in regard to procuring an address to be delivered in the
Hall of the House of Delegates, on the 17th day of March, on
the life and public services of the late Chief Justice Taney,
and respectfully decline to concur therein. We invite your
favorable consideration of the Joint Resolutions of the Senate,
introduced simultaneously with your own, as being more in
consonance with the facts of the case ; the Committee ap-
pointed to procure a statue of the late Chief Justice Taney,
having executed the duty confided to them, when, they sub-
mitted their report on the 10th day of December, 1872, and
delivered the statue into the possession and keeping of the
State, through his Excellency, the Honorable Wm. Pinkney
Whyte.

We respectfully ask the favorable consideration and con-
currence of your Honorable Body in our Joint Resolutions.

Which was read, assented to, and sent to the House of
Delegates.
