and illustrating Independence Hall, desires to con-

 

tribute towards its Gallery copies of portraits of two

 

of the signers of the Declaration of Independence,

 

from this State, not already there represented,

namely : Thomas Stone, and William Paca, and also

 

the portrait of Thomas Johnson, formerly Governor

 

of this State, who, in the Continental Congress, nom-

 

inated George Washington to be " commander in

 

chief of all the armies raised and to be raised;" and

 

further, in order that the original thirteen States may
be completely represented in armorial bearings in

 

the National Museum of Independence Hall, that a

 

copy of the heraldic device of the State in panel also

 

be contributed to the said museum; therefore —

 

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of

 

Maryland, That the Governor of the State be and he

 

is hereby authorized and directed to cause to be

signers of the Declaration of Independence, and also

 

of Thomas Johnson, formerly Governor of this State,

 

who nominated George Washington, in the Conti-

 

nental Congress, to be commander in chief of the ar-

 

mies of the United States ; the said portraits to be

 

in size twenty by twenty-four inches, and also cause

 

to be painted a copy of the heraldic device of the

 

State in panel : the said pictures to be suitably framed

 

and contributed to and placed in Independence Hall

 

at Philadelphia.

 

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the sum of five hun-

 

dred dollars be and the same is hereby appropriated

for the purpose hereinbefore set forth ; four hundred
dollars for the paintings and one hundred dollars for

 

suitably framing the same ; and the Treasurer, upon the

 

warrant of the Comptroller, is hereby directed to pay

 

the said sum to such person or persons for the ser-

 

vices herein indicated, as the Governor may direct,

 

out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise ap-

 

propriated.

 

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That this act shall take

 

effect from the date of its passage.
