more county, be and they are hereby authorized and

required to appoint such number of policemen as

they may deem necessary, for the better protection

of persons and property in Baltimore county, the

number not to exceed thirty at any one time, and to
|
 
|
designate such number of said policemen as they
|
 
|
may deem advisable, not exceeding five, as chief
|

policemen, and shall equip and arm said police force,
|
 
|
and make such rules and regulations for their proper
|
 
|
government and discipline as they may deem best
|
 
|
to promote the efficiency of the same.
|
 
|
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty
|

to preserve the public peace, prevent crime and

protect the rights of persons and property, see that
|
 
|
all laws relating to the observance of Sunday, and
|
 
|
regarding gambling, intemperance, vagrants, dis-
orderly persons, and the public health are enforced ;

and to arrest all offenders against the laws of the
|
 
|
State; and to take such offenders to the nearest
|
 
|
justice of the peace for said county.
|
 
|
SEC. 3. And be it enacted. That the pay of each
|
 
|
policemen shall be two dollars per day, except such
|

shall furnish their own horses, trappings, equipments
|
 
|
and forage for horses, and the pay of the mounted
|
 
|
policemen shall be three dollars per day ; all pay rolls

to be made out and certified as required by the said

County Commissioners.

|
SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the County Com-

|
missioners of Baltimore County shall levy annually,
|
 
|
a sum sufficient to pay said policemen and all necessary

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That this act shall take
