309, entitled an Act to incorporate the North Branch Com-
pany by adding two sections thereto, to be numbered 8
and 9.

Was read a second time and ordered to be engrossed for a
third reading.

Mr. Koons submitted the following Joint Resolution :

WHEREAS, By the Constitution of the United States, which
is recognized by the fundamental law of this State as the su-
preme law of the land, anything in the Constitution of this
State to the contrary notwithstanding, the right to the
elective franchise is conferred upon all citizens, irrespective of
race or color ; Therefore,

Be it Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the retention of the word "white" in the Constitution of this
State is obnoxious to censure, because it is in contravention
of the National Constitution and in opposition to the spirit
of the age.

Which was read and referred to the Committee on the
Judiciary.

The following Acts of Assembly were this day presented to
his Excellency the Governor for his approval :

No. 221. An Act to repeal chapter 193, of the Acts passed
at January session, 1872, and to re-enact the same with
amendments, so that oysters sold in the shell at Baltimore,
Crisfield, and at all packing establishments, shall be meas-
ured in an iron measure.

No. 222. An Act to pay and compensate William Frank
Tucker and Andrew K. Syester for legal services rendered
in the United States Cojrts in defence of certain Officers of
Registration, &c., indicted and prosecuted therein for an
alleged violation of the Act of Congress entitled "An Act to
enforce the rights of citizens of the United States to vote in
the several States of the Union, and other purposes."

No. 223. An Act to authorize the Comptroller to settle the
claim of Lawrence D. Dietz.
