On the part of this House, we have appointed Messrs. Mer-
ryman, Freaner, McColgan and Groome, to join the gentle-
men who may be named by your Honorable Body, to compose
the Committee contemplated by the, first, resolution.

Whereas, The Governor of the State, in his message to the
General Assembly, has suggested that the statue of the late
Chief Justice Taney, now located in the Capitol Grounds, be
formerly handed over to the State by the Commissioners ap-
pointed under the Act of the General Assembly of 1867, Chap-
ter 71.
Therefore, Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That a joint Special Committee of four, on the part of the
House, and three of the Senate, be appointed, to request said
Commissioners to appear in the Hall of the House of Dele-
gates, on the 17th day of March next, and that upon the oc-
casion, S. Teakle Wallis, Esq., the Chairman of said Com-
mission be invited to deliver an oration upon the life and
public services of the late Chief Justice.
Resolved, That said Committee be authorized to make all
necessary arrangements to carry out the above resolution.

On motion were referred to Messrs. Earle, Tuck and Lloyd.
Mr. Davis submitted the following message to the House
of Delegates:
BY THE SENATE,
January 14th, 1874.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates :
We propose, with the concurrence of your Honorable Body,
the appointment of a Joint Committee of three from the
House of Delegates and two from the Senate, to visit the
Maryland Asylum, at Spring Grove, in Baltimore county,
and to report to the two Houses as to the condition of said
Institute; the manner in which it is conducted, and what
steps are necessary to protect the State's interest therein.
We have appointed on the part of the Senate, Messrs. Davis
and Steiner.
